The Blowout
Things were getting back into a good routine these last few days. I was getting time to write almost every night; Ruck is currently headed toward an uncharted system to search for resources and habitable planets. With yesterday being a snow day, I even got to soundboard a fascinating new book idea from another writer in the house.
Seeing how much fun I have writing, Weston, our oldest, has decided that he is going to pursue writing. Whether as a hobby or career is still to be determined, but he loves getting his idea’s on the page for others to enjoy. So, here’s the pitch: a family returns to Ohio to find that the state is in the middle of its civil war. So, a trip meant to explore the parent’s old stomping ground turns into a fight for survival as they try to navigate the war and get back out of the state.
Personally, I think it is going to be a great story. He is shooting to make it a young reader’s book in the same vein as the I Survived series. From the storyboarding and prep work he has already done, I think he’s got something special. Working together, he hopes to have it published by the end of the year.
When I wasn’t working with him on his newest story, I got to just hang with the girls. No errands to run or places to go; we just got to veg out on the couch. Unfortunately, that is where the day went sideways. As I was getting ready to meet my wife and take the older three to see their dad, I slipped on some ice, and my right knee folded in the wrong direction. The day went from excellent to horrible in a couple steps.
I managed to get the kids back inside, after which I shot my wife a call to get back to the house. Then, not wanting to spend more time than necessary lying on the cold, wet ground, I managed to get back inside to check on the baby, who was party to the entire event and get off my misshapen knee that was quickly turning into a basketball.
Sabrina got home, and once we got the kids off to their dad’s, she took me up to Cleveland. Being a veteran, we had to drive an hour and a half to the nearest VA hospital, where I got an x-ray, knee immobilizer, crutches, and some painkillers. From what they had seen, I tore my patellar tendon, and my kneecap was pushed past the head of my femur into my thigh.
Monday, I have an appointment with ortho, where I will get an MRI to see the extent of the damage. Even with what they know now, surgery is going to be necessary. Looks like I’m going to be laid up for the foreseeable future. Without being able to do much else, I will try and be productive and push even harder for the new book to get finished. Either that, or I’m going to go stir-crazy.
Please leave a comment letting me know what you think of Wes’ new endeavor.
